A musical virtuoso who began playing the saxophone at age 11, the now 25-year old Isaiah Collier is a force to be reckoned with. Grammy-nominated, self-styled “sonic scientist,” Collier’s sound is a dynamic flurry of metaphors, that is at once thought-provoking, hair-raisingly energetic, and immensely danceable. Eager to learn from those who’ve come before as well as his contemporaries, Collier describes his music as a “sonic time machine; you can’t really put a time or destination on it.” Furthering thoughts on his process Collier says, “I reach backwards, and forwards simultaneously when creating art and what is ahead of me is the past.”
Collier is the recipient of many accolades include being named one of the Chicago Tribune, Artists of the Year and his much-lauded album The Almighty (Division 81) was selected as one of the Top Ten Jazz Recordings of 2024 by The New York Times. He has also received numerous DownBeat awards. With 6 albums already under his belt, Collier is not letting up anytime soon. Collier’s latest album The World Is On Fire (Division 81) released late last year, takes an outward look into society and reverberates with the zeitgeist of today’s uproarious socio-political landscape.
