Various venues, Tacoma
The second annual Tacoma Jazz Walk on Saturday, March 4, is the latest highly anticipated addition to the jazz scene put on by the Tacoma Jazz Association, a local non-profit.
The event will be staged in the heart of Tacoma’s historic Theater and Antique Row districts, and will feature some of the finest jazz talent in the Pacific Northwest. Nine venues will play host to an evening celebrating jazz: the B Sharp Coffee House, Sanford & Son Antiques, Tacoma City Ballet, Good Karma Center for Joy, Serenity Spa, Union Salon, Stink, Urban Grace Church, and Matty Photography. All venues are family friendly for all ages.
The one-night jazz spectacular will feature Grammy-nominated saxophonist Pete Christlieb alongside trombonist Linda Small in their Tall & Small Quintet, as well as more than 50 musicians from the Pacific Northwest, including Pearl Django, the Tracy Knoop Quartet, the David Joyner Trio, Johnaye Kendrick, Kareem Kandi, and many more.
“There was a lot of positive feedback from the community at large after the event last year, and there’s a lot of anticipation going into it this year,” says Kareem Kandi, director of the Tacoma Jazz Association. “The Jazz Walk is a unique experience for the city in that you get so many great artists in one night, for one fee….It’s important for the city of Tacoma in that it adds to and enhances [the jazz scene].”
The event benefits the Tacoma Jazz Association and JazzClubsNW. Both organizations are member-run, member-sustained 501(c)(3) non-profits dedicated to supporting live music performance and education in Tacoma and the Pacific Northwest. The Tacoma Jazz Association presents live jazz every month at The Swiss in Tacoma, and JazzClubsNW has organized the North Bend Jazz Walk since 2012.
One ticket allows access to all shows and venues. Ticket holders will be able to walk from venue to venue and enjoy the best the local jazz scene has to offer from 6pm to midnight.
Advance tickets are $20 adult/$10 youth, available online at tacomajazzwalk.com. Day-of-show tickets are $30 adult/$15 youth. To promote sustaining memberships, the event website is promoting free tickets to new members who join the Tacoma Jazz Association through February 29. All proceeds benefit local jazz education, performance, and scholarships.
The 2017 Tacoma Jazz Walk is supported by local corporate sponsors: Mercedes-Benz of Tacoma, Umpqua Bank, Jazz Live at Marine View, Titus-Will, Tacoma City Ballet, KNKX, B Sharp Coffee House, and South Sound Magazine.
