DownBeat Critics Poll
Resident artist Wayne Horvitz was listed on the 61st annual DownBeat Critics Poll, in the keyboard and organ categories. Former Seattleites Chris Speed, Jim Black and flutist Anne Drummond were listed elsewhere in the poll. In the Rising Stars section of the poll, Skerik was listed for tenor saxophone and Eyvind Kang was listed second for violin. Full results are in the August issue of DownBeat magazine.

Gust Burns NYC Mention
Composer and pianist Gust Burns featured in July’s “Listen Up!” column in the New York City Jazz Record. It printed in conjunction with July performances in New York by Burns. Also in July, the pianist’s Improvisation No. 5 featured on Jack Straw’s Artist of the Week Podcast, July 3, the result of his and Victor Noriega’s 2 Trios project. The two pianists played separately with the rhythm section of Jeff Johnson and Greg Campbell. Find the “Listen Up!” column at nycjazzrecord.com.

The Stranger Genius Award Nominees
Vocalist Jessika Kenney and violist Eyvind Kang – instructors at Cornish College – composer Jherek Bischoff, and rapper and Cornish grad Katie Kate are this year’s music nominees for The Stranger Genius Award. They discussed their work with current Stranger music editor Emily Nokes at the Frye Art Museum in late July. Other Genius categories are Film, Visual Art, Literature and Performance. Geniuses are awarded $5,000; recipients will be announced at a ceremony at The Moore, September 28. More information at www.thestranger.com/seattle/special/genius.
