The powerful, soulful saxophonist Richard Cole is one of the most in-demand musicians in the Pacific Northwest. His work as a soloist has been praised for its “bite and invention” (Seattle Times) and he is known for his skill at mixing together “hard-edged bop romps with sunny standards and cool contemporary fusion.” (JazzTimes)
Beside work with such jazz greats as Randy Brecker, Dave Holland, Adam Nussbaum, Julian Priester and John Fedchock, Cole has toured regularly with fusion star Dan Siegel. He has also performed with rhythm and blues legends Gladys Knight, The Temptations and The Four Tops.
Cole cites numerous influences, including the seminal jazz performances of John Coltrane and Joe Henderson. He studied music at Western Washington University and taught woodwinds, ensembles, and improvisation in the music school at the prestigious Cornish College of the Arts here in Seattle.
Richard can be heard regularly in the Seattle area playing with top-notch musicians like John Bishop, John Hansen, Jeff Johnson, and Bill Anschell. Tonight’s performance celebrates the release of his latest album for the Origin label, Inner Mission, a recording which features modern jazz giant Randy Brecker. For tonight’s performance, he is joined by a stellar cast that includes Thomas Marriot (trumpet), Anschell (piano), Chuck Deardorf (bass), and Matt Jorgensen (drums).
