THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4 & FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5 TULA’S, 7:30PM Carmen Staaf Trio .$12 general, $10 members/seniors, $6 studentsCall 206-443-4221 for reservations. Carmen Staaf, one of the finest alumna of the Garfield program, has made huge strides in her decade out East. She performs for two nights here with New York trio-mates, Kendall Eddy on bass and Austin McMahon on drums. In May 2009, Staaf won the prestigious Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Pianist Competition held annually as part of the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival. At the Kennedy Center event, a panel that included piano legend Dr. Billy Taylor and pianist-composer Toshiko Akiyoshi selected Staaf from four finalists from around the world. Her performance was measured, nuanced, and convincing in a way that signaled Staaf’s impressive growth as a musician since she left Seattle. In 2008 Staaf moved from Boston to New York to pursue a full-time performance career playing and touring with bands such as Four Across and the Prana Trio. Living in Brooklyn, her experiences have included backing Mexican singer Lila Downs at Carnegie Hall, performing at various venues in a dog suit with Internet sensation the Xylopholks, and playing accordion in a puppet musical about the Rosenberg trial. Her own highly praised album, Reflection, appeared in 2007. -Peter Monaghan |
